Joy IS an ADL
Why Joy is Just as Important as Other ADLs in Senior Care
When choosing a home care provider for yourself or a loved one, it’s natural to look at practicalities: will the caregiver assist with bathing, dressing, meal preparation, medication reminders, and other essential activities of daily living (ADLs)? These are all critical to maintaining independence and dignity for seniors, and most home care providers deliver these services effectively. But our approach is different.
At Amevian Home Care, we believe that JOY IS AN ADL—one that’s just as vital as dressing or eating. While other companies focus solely on the necessary routines, we recognize that there’s more to life than completing a checklist. Joy enriches every part of the day, boosts mental and emotional health, and makes life worth living. This is why we go beyond basic assistance by incorporating joy as a core part of our caregiving philosophy.
Why Joy Matters
Research consistently shows that joy and positive emotional experiences improve health, reduce stress, and promote longevity. For seniors, especially those who may live alone or face mobility and health challenges, joyful moments can transform their day, lift their spirits, and provide a sense of purpose. Simply put, joy is not an afterthought for us; it’s an essential element in the care we provide.
How We Bring Joy to Everyday Care
Our Caregivers are not only skilled in traditional ADLs but are also trained and encouraged to bring joy and companionship into every interaction. Whether it’s sharing a laugh during a meal, engaging in a favorite activity, or simply listening with genuine interest, our Caregivers are there to create moments of happiness that make each day better.
Some ways we incorporate joy into our care include:
Life Enrichment Plan: We focus on joy, enrichment, and meaning by creating a Life Enrichment Plan before serving our clients for the first time. We want to know about them as a person, not just as a client needing our assistance. This plan covers a wide variety of topics, like family history, hobbies, favorite things, and even favorite places (like hair and nail salons, restaurants, parks, etc.). We want our Caregivers to be fully equipped to deliver joy every time we show up.
Personalized Interactions: From the foundation of our Life Enrichment Plan, our Caregivers take the time to dig even deeper into our client’s likes, dislikes, hobbies, and interests. Whether it’s reminiscing over cherished memories, listening to a favorite genre of music, or sharing a favorite book, we make these moments personal.
Engaging Activities: From baking a family recipe together, doing light stretches to favorite tunes, or visiting a nearby nail salon, we find small, meaningful ways to bring fun and lightheartedness into daily routines.
Celebrating Milestones: Every birthday, holiday, or personal milestone is an opportunity to celebrate. Our caregivers go the extra mile to make these occasions special, even if it’s something as simple as decorating with a favorite flower or baking cookies.
A Joy-Centered Approach Makes a Lasting Impact
Our clients’ families tell us that they see a difference when joy is woven into everyday care. The smile that follows a favorite song, the warmth after a good conversation, or the comfort that comes from feeling truly seen and cared for—these moments are priceless. They’re also a reminder that care is not just about doing things for someone but being with them in a way that brings meaning and happiness.
